This paper is a report of the needs assessment conducted among the current graduate students, past graduate students (professionals) and faculty of Arizona State University to find their views on the course “Instructional Media Design” being offered online. The needs assessment helps to identify the gap that exists between the actual and the optimal states of the course. Allison Rossett’s purposes for needs assessment (Actual, Optimal, Feelings) are used in the surveys and interviews. Findings indicate that only 14% of the participants preferred a totally online setting for the course, more than 60% preferred a blended approach of online and classroom based learning.
