Recommendations
for adapting homes so they are optimized for the needs of older adults
with mobility limitations and balance problems.
Easy Access
Bathroom
- Provide level access shower or bath (walk-in shower)
- Install a raised toilet seat
- Install grab bars in the shower, by the bathtub, by the toilet
- Use non-skid mats or adhesive strips in bathtubs and showers to
prevent slipping
- Clamp adjustable safety rail onto the edge of bathtub
- Install lever-handle faucets
- Place portable seat inside the shower
- Replace fixed shower heads with flexible hand-held shower heads
Uncluttered
Hallways
- Install ramps to external doors
- Arrange furniture to leave wide corridors for wheelchairs or walkers
- Install more lights
- Remove thresholds and loose rugs
- Replace round doorknobs with lever handles
- Install non-skid treads on stairs
- Edge stairs with bright nonskid tape to highlight changes in floor
levels
- Extend hand rail at the end of the stairs
Easy to Reach Kitchen
- Lower closet shelving and cabinets
- Install sliding shelves and lazy susan in corner cabinets
- Install C or D ring handles on cabinet doors and drawers for easy
gripping
Safe Bedroom
- Install slide-out shelving, adjustable rods, baskets and other
closet organizers
- Install a bed rail and/or handrails if mobility problems are severe
- Secure mats with nonskid backing or double-sided carpet tape
Lowered
Furniture in the Living Room
- Ensure chairs have arms and seats that are high enough to allow
for easy sitting down/getting up
- Widen doorways by removing moldings and replacing hinges
- Secure telephone and electrical cords
