Mobility limitations and balance problems may significantly reduce the quality of life of older adults. Individuals with mobility and balance difficulties need to modify their home environment in order to function independently and safely at home. The goal is to make home care environments comfortable and adaptive for people experiencing mobility and balance challenges.

Environmental modifications to home care settings should address the various mobility and balance problems of older adults. Generally, it is wise to focus on:

  • Making bathrooms accident-proof by installing grab bars, non-slip rubber mats, hand-held shower, portable seats
  • Removing physical obstacles, such as loose telephone cords and sharp furniture edges
  • Installing non-slip flooring
  • Avoiding slippery rugs and runners
  • Increasing the level of illumination
  • Making sure passageways, stairs, and rooms stay neat and uncluttered
  • Applying abrasive strips to each step and installing a handrail
  • Making cabinets easily reachable and keeping a step stool handy
