Communicating with a doctor about eye problems

It is very important to talk about vision problems of older adults. Uncorrected and untreated vision problems can lead to diminished quality of life. Low vision affects daily routines (walking, going outside, cooking), and even leisure activities (reading, sewing, traveling, sports). People with low vision might develop problems performing those tasks. In addition, people with low vision who lose their depth perception are at greater risk of falling and injuring themselves.

Questions to ask eye doctor regarding vision problem of your older relative:

  • What is the name of the eye condition?
  • Is the person going to lose his/her vision?
  • What are the treatment options?
  • Are there any aids to help utilize the remaining vision better?
  • What are the resources (agencies, programs) that can provide us with assistance?
