Risks for People with Mobility and Balance Problems

Many older Americans experience balance problems. Every year, over 734,000 older adults over the age of 65 are treated for injuries caused by falls from, manipulation with, and use of furniture and other products commonly found in their homes.

Some older adults have mobility difficulties. Canes, crutches, walkers, and wheelchairs can be wonderful liberators. However, people with mobility problems have to take special measures to maintain their independence and high quality of life.

The following is a list of things to look for in homes of people with mobility and balance problems:

  • Is there cluttered furniture that prevents easy movement?
  • Are passageways cluttered?
  • Are shelves and cabinets easily accessible?
  • Is there lack of handrails at the end of stairways?
  • Are there carpets, stairs or thresholds which can cause tripping?
  • Are there any loose rugs?
  • Can skidding occur?
  • Is the flooring slippery?
  • Are there telephone cords that run across the floor?
  • Is the bathroom soapy, and slippery?
  • Are there grab bars in the bathroom?
  • Can shower heads be easily reached?
